Start with the trip you want to take

Choose a departure airport, the number of people travelling, a realistic points budget, and a range of dates. Flexibility helps, but a trip still needs to fit your life. A connecting itinerary with an awkward overnight may be less useful than a straightforward economy flight.

Treat business class as a preference to weigh alongside the whole itinerary. Check the cabin on every segment: a long economy flight with a short business connection is a different experience from the reverse.

Find the way home before celebrating

Check the return with the same care as the outbound. Note local arrival dates, airport changes, connections, and any positioning flight. A one-way award price should be labelled one-way, and the total should include both directions for every traveller.

Match the hotel to the actual stay

Use the destination arrival date for check-in and the departure date for check-out. Confirm the same room for the full stay and the correct number of guests. An available night in a calendar does not establish availability for every night of your holiday.

Consider paying cash for the hotel when the rate is good, and save points for a more useful redemption. Include taxes, mandatory fees, and ground transport in the budget.

Keep the booking sequence close at hand

Identify the loyalty program that sells the award, the account you transfer from, and the precise steps to book. The airline you fly and the program you book through can differ. Check availability directly before moving points and read the transfer and cancellation terms.

PointsTrip is being built around these complete trip plans. Illustrations on this site show the format; they are not claims of current award availability.
